Indian boxer Vijender mobbed after historic medal

Indian middleweight Vijender Kumar was mobbed by dozens of excited journalists after sealing the country's first ever Olympic boxing medal on Wednesday.

Kumar was vigorously hugged and kissed by Indian media as he left the Workers Stadium arena after his historic 9-4 victory over Carlos Gongora of Ecuador.

The 23-year-old bus-driver's son, and part-time model, said he fought the bout of his life to reach the semi-finals. Two other Indian boxers, both also named Kumar, were eliminated in the last eight.

"This is a great day for Indian boxing. We've been under a lot of pressure recently so one of us had to do it," Kumar said.

"This was the best fight of my life because I've achieved something for the country. I want to thank all the Indian people for praying for me."

Kumar comes from India's 'Village of Boxers' -- Kalwash in the northern state of Haryana.

His father, who worked overtime on the buses to pay for his career, and his mother went on a special Hindu pilgrimage to the Ganges river before the Olympics.

Kumar said he had already realised his goal after finishing outside the medals at Athens 2004.

"I've been working hard from then on. Now my journey is complete," he said.

The Indian now faces a tough semi-final against Cuba's Emilio Correa, one of eight Cuban boxers to reach the medal rounds. He said he had a simple strategy for Friday's semi-final.

"Win, win and win," he said.

Kumar's medal was India's second bronze of the day after Sushil Kumar, no relation, managed the feat in the freestyle wrestling.

Flyweight Jitender Kumar was earlier eliminated in the flyweight quarter-finals, following yet another namesake, bantamweight Akhil Kumar.

Jitender said he had taken the wrestler's bronze medal as a good omen.

"I'm just feeling sad I couldn't get a medal. I heard on the bus that an Indian wrestler got a bronze today," he said.

"I felt good about it. I thought maybe I would be able to do it as well."

Last week, bespectacled shooter Abhinav Bindra took gold in the men's 10m air rifle event in India's greatest success of the Games. He was given a hero's welcome on his return to New Delhi.

Rani 'Lands' in more trouble

Bollywood actor Rani Mukerji may have to pay Rs.2.1 million to local authorities for the controversial plot of land she has bought near Shirdi in Maharashtra, officials said Tuesday."An inquiry over the illegal transaction and cancellation of the previous revenue records were made today," Ahmed Nagar Sub-Divisional Magistrate Nandkumar Suryavanshi told over telephone. The star's private secretary and her lawyer Tuesday attended the first hearing of the case related to the land deal in the Sub-Divisional Magistrate's office at Ahmed Nagar. Suryavanshi further stated that, according to Section 29 of the Land Ceiling Act, Mukerji will have to pay 75 percent of the market value of the land to the government. Thus, she will have to pay Rs. 2.1 million.Mukerji had bought 11 guntas of land in 2005 from an agent, Sampat More. The property comes under the category of a new tenure land, which can be bought only with the permission from a competent authority of the district. More had not registered the property in his name when he bought it in the 1980s and sold it to the actor who purchased it without verifying the documents, landing in trouble. The district authority has not chosen not to transfer the land in her name till the inquiry is completed.Mukerji has been summoned on Dec 31 for the second hearing. The final hearing and the judgement will be given by the divisional commissioner later.

Big B and Abhishek Upcoming Film " Pa "

Ad-maker Balki's first feature film Cheeni Kam has been a resounding critical and a decent commercial success. He's now writing his second feature entitled Pa featuring the father-son Bachchans in their real-life roles. The process has been time-taking.And arduous. In the meanwhile Balki has been busy making ads for the company Lintas where he still works in spite of such success as a filmmaker."After Cheeni Kam I was back in advertising. This is a good time to make ad films, so I've been directing quite a lot of ad films."Balki's triumphs include the 'Idea' mobile ad with Abhishek Bachchan. "The ad featuring Abhishek and a panchayat is mine. In addition I've recently directed ads for Tata tea, Bajaj and Surf Excel. Like I said, 2007 has been a good year for advertising. But now I need to get back to my film. I confess I've been a little slow with the scripting of Pa. But now I'm just about to complete the screenplay."Pa would be the third film to feature the Big B and Abhishek as father and son after Sarkar and its sequel Sarkar Raj. It would also be a far more moist and sentimental father-son drama.
